Hex to Text Converter

Decode hexadecimal byte values back into readable text.

Decode hex into readable text

Hex dumps appear in network captures, log files, database exports, firmware, and puzzles and CTF challenges. A long row like 48 65 6C 6C 6F is hard to read, but each pair is simply a byte of text. This tool converts the pairs back into characters instantly, using UTF-8 so that accented letters, Indian scripts and emoji decode correctly.

How to use it

  1. Paste the hex values. You do not need to clean them up: spaces, commas, colons, 0x, \x and % prefixes are removed automatically.
  2. The decoded text appears straight away.
  3. If something is wrong, the message tells you whether there is an invalid character or an odd number of digits.

How decoding works

Each two-digit hex number is converted to a byte value from 0 to 255. For example, 4D = 4 × 16 + 13 = 77, which is the letter "M". The bytes are then read as UTF-8: values below 128 are single ASCII characters, and multi-byte sequences such as E2 9C 93 form one character (here, a check mark ✓).

Why do I see symbols?

The replacement character means some bytes do not form valid UTF-8 text. The data might be binary (such as part of an image or compressed file), use a different encoding like Windows-1252, or have a byte missing at the start or end.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert text to hex?

Use the Text to Hex converter.

Is hex a form of encryption?

No. Hex is just another way of writing the same bytes, and anyone can decode it.

Can I decode a hex color like FF5733?

It will decode, but the result is not meaningful text. Color codes describe red, green and blue values.
