Password Generator

Create strong, random passwords with the length and characters you choose.

Why use a random password?

Most accounts that get hacked are protected by passwords that are short, reused or easy to guess, like a name plus a birth year. Attackers use programs that try billions of common passwords and leaked passwords every second. A long password made of truly random characters cannot be guessed this way. This generator creates such passwords using your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator.

How to create a strong password

  1. Set the length. Use at least 14 to 16 characters for important accounts.
  2. Keep all four character types ticked unless a website does not allow symbols.
  3. Tick Avoid look-alikes if you will need to read or type the password by hand.
  4. Click Copy and save it straight into a password manager.

How strength is measured

Strength is shown as entropy in bits, which measures how many guesses an attacker would need:

entropy = length × log₂(number of possible characters)

With all four sets there are 88 possible characters, so each character adds about 6.5 bits. A 16-character password has about 103 bits, meaning around 1031 possible combinations, which would take longer than the age of the universe to try even at a trillion guesses per second. Each password is guaranteed to include at least one character from every set you chose, and the characters are shuffled so their positions are random too.

Frequently asked questions

Do you see or store the passwords?

No. Passwords are generated by JavaScript on your device and are never sent over the internet.

Is a long passphrase better than random characters?

Four to six random, unrelated words can be just as strong and easier to remember, as long as the words are chosen randomly.
