How fast do you type?
Typing speed is an everyday skill for students, office workers, programmers and writers, and some government and private jobs, such as data entry and clerical posts, include a typing test. This free test measures your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy, and highlights every mistake as you type so you can see where you go wrong.
How to take the test
- Choose the test length and difficulty.
- Click in the typing box and start typing the text shown above it. The timer starts with your first key press.
- Correct characters turn green and mistakes are highlighted in red. Keep going until time runs out.
- Read your WPM, accuracy and number of errors, then click New test to try again.
How WPM is calculated
Because words have different lengths, typing tests use a standard "word" of 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. This test counts only correctly typed characters, so mistakes lower your score:
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ all characters typed × 100
Example: if you type 220 correct characters in one minute, your speed is 220 ÷ 5 = 44 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Below 25 | Beginner (often hunt-and-peck) |
| 25–40 | Average for most people |
| 40–60 | Good; meets most office requirements |
| 60–80 | Fast; typical of professional typists |
| 80+ | Excellent |
Many clerical job tests in India ask for around 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi, but each exam sets its own rules, so check the official notification.
Tips to type faster
- Learn touch typing: rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use all ten fingers.
- Do not look at the keyboard. It feels slow at first but doubles your speed later.
- Focus on accuracy first. Speed follows naturally once your fingers know where the keys are.
- Practise daily for 10–15 minutes. Short, regular sessions build muscle memory.
