What are meta tags?
Meta tags are short pieces of HTML in the <head> of a page. Visitors do not see them on the page, but search engines and social networks read them. The title tag and meta description often become the blue link and grey text in Google results, and Open Graph tags decide the title, text and picture shown when someone shares your link on WhatsApp, Facebook or LinkedIn. Good tags make more people click.
How to generate your tags
- Write a clear page title and description. The counters turn green when the length is in the recommended range.
- Add the page URL, a share image of 1200 × 630 pixels, and your site name.
- Choose the page type and whether search engines may index it.
- Copy the generated code into the
<head>section of that page. In WordPress, plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math have fields for the same information.
What each tag does
| Tag | Purpose |
|---|---|
<title> | The page name in search results and browser tabs. The most important on-page SEO tag. |
meta description | A summary that search engines may show under your title. It does not directly change rankings but strongly affects clicks. |
canonical | Tells search engines the main URL when the same content is reachable at several addresses. |
robots | Asks search engines not to index a page, for example thank-you or admin pages. |
og:* | Open Graph tags for link previews on Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and more. |
twitter:* | Card style and content for links shared on X (Twitter). |
Writing tips
- Put the main keyword near the start of the title and keep it under about 60 characters so it is not cut off.
- Write the description as a short invitation: what the reader gets and why it is useful, in about 150 characters.
- Give every page a unique title and description. Duplicates make pages compete with each other.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google always use my description?
No. Google may write its own snippet from the page text if it matches the search better. A good description still raises the chance it is used.
Do meta keywords help SEO?
No. Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so this generator leaves it out.
How can I see what my result will look like?
Use the Google SERP Preview tool.
