Rotate & Flip Image

Rotate a photo by 90° or 180°, or mirror it horizontally or vertically.

Fix sideways, upside-down and mirrored photos

Photos sometimes appear sideways after you copy them from a phone or camera, and selfies are often saved as a mirror image, which makes text in the background read backwards. This tool lets you turn the picture the right way round and flip it before you share, print or upload it.

How to rotate or flip an image

  1. Choose your image. It appears in the preview area.
  2. Click Rotate left or Rotate right to turn it by 90 degrees. Click twice for 180 degrees.
  3. Click Flip horizontal to mirror it left-to-right, or Flip vertical to turn it upside down like a reflection in water.
  4. Choose PNG or JPG and click Download.

Rotate vs flip: what is the difference?

Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, like turning a printed photo on a table. Nothing is reversed, so text still reads normally. Rotating by 90 or 270 degrees swaps the width and height, so a 1200 × 800 landscape image becomes an 800 × 1200 portrait image.

Flipping creates a mirror image. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, so a person looking left will look right, and any writing appears backwards. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom.

Why do photos appear sideways?

Cameras store the picture in one direction and add a small tag called EXIF orientation that tells software how to display it. Some websites and older programs ignore the tag, so the picture shows sideways. Saving a rotated copy here creates a new file where the pixels themselves are in the correct direction, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating reduce image quality?

Turning by 90, 180 or 270 degrees moves pixels without blending them, so there is no loss when you save as PNG. JPG output is saved at high quality.

Can I rotate by a custom angle like 45 degrees?

This tool rotates in 90 degree steps, which covers almost every real-world need without adding empty corners.
