Why compress images?
Photos from modern phones are often 3 to 8 MB each. That is too large for many email attachments, online application forms and websites. A smaller file uploads faster, takes less storage and makes web pages load more quickly, which also helps your search ranking. In most cases you can cut the file size by 60 to 90 percent with no difference you can see.
How to compress an image
- Click Choose an image and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP file from your device.
- Move the quality slider. Around 60 to 75 percent is a good balance for photos.
- If the picture is very large, type a maximum width such as 1600 or 1200 pixels. Reducing dimensions saves far more space than lowering quality alone.
- Watch the compressed size and preview update, then click Download compressed image.
How the compression works
The tool draws your picture onto an HTML canvas and saves it again as a JPG or WebP using your chosen quality. These formats use lossy compression: they remove fine detail that the human eye hardly notices, such as tiny changes in color between neighbouring pixels. Lower quality removes more detail and gives a smaller file.
WebP files are usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG files at the same visual quality and work in all modern browsers. Choose JPG if the image must open in older software.
Example
A 4000 × 3000 phone photo of 4.2 MB, compressed at 70 percent quality with a maximum width of 1600 pixels, typically becomes about 250 to 400 KB. That is roughly a 90 percent saving and still looks sharp on a laptop screen.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens inside your browser, so your photos stay on your phone or computer. This makes the tool safe for personal pictures and documents.
Why did my PNG get bigger?
Screenshots and graphics with large flat areas can already be small as PNG. Saving them as JPG may not help. Try WebP, or keep the original PNG.
Does compression remove transparency?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose WebP to keep a transparent background.
